Rex's Birth Story | Sacred Heart Low Intervention Birth Pensacola, Florida

As you may have worked out from Ambrose’s birth story, Rex is baby number 2 of my epic triple-header birth saga. So to recap… Baby Ambrose has just been born and I have mama Courtney being monitored in triage to determine whether or not she needs to be induced for complications. And Priscilla and Jared have just arrived at the hospital…

After laboring for 2 days at home and ultimately stalling out on Tuesday night, Priscilla and Jared arrived and were admitted to the hospital in labor… just in time to see my running through the halls screaming for someone to come and help Erin and Nathan get out of the shower and back to the bed with baby Ambrose, who was still connected to mama via umbilical cord.

Priscilla’s labor had restarted suddenly and upon arrival at the hospital they discovered she was already eight centimeters dilated. I popped down the hall to check on her, but it seemed clear that I would have time to go back and finish up with Ambrose before anything major happened.

And indeed, Priscilla labored for another 7ish hours before Rex was born.

Meanwhile… Courtney and Jason let me know they were being taken back for induction. I popped in to check on her a couple of times while Priscilla was laboring. And at some point, the memories are hazy, her super thoughtful husband insisted on bringing a (much needed) Venti latte to Priscilla’s room for me!

Priscilla was experiencing some intense, one-sided rib pain with each contraction (hence the heating pad you’ll see jerry-rigged to her back), and midwife Amber and I suspected an asynclitic baby not yet engaged in the pelvis. We had her and Jared try the Flying Cowgirl and Walcher’s, both rather uncomfortable positions/techniques to do mid-labor, but they worked to get Rex engaged! She still pushed hard for 2.5 hours, trying out a ton of pushing positions and techniques at Amber’s suggestions. After more than 48 hours of labor, we all knew she was exhausted, but she was perfectly incredible the entire time.

Then just as the nurses were preparing to move Priscilla to postpartum, I get a text from Courtney’s husband Jason… My third baby of the day was coming FAST!
