What is a Fresh 48? | Pensacola Newborn Photographer

If you’ve been here a while or not a first time mom, you’re probably familiar with the concept of a Fresh 48. But if you’re new to the game, I’m going to give you a rundown on this type of session and why it may be the perfect fit for you.

WHAT IS A FRESH 48?

Basically, a Fresh 48 is a newborn session in the birth space (hospital, home or birth center) within the first 48 hours of birth. Though a Fresh 48 can look very much like birth coverage, this type of session does not include any coverage of delivery or just born moments. This is a common misconception that with a Fresh 48 I will be able to arrive just as baby is delivered to capture those very first moments. But labor and delivery is unpredictable and it just isn’t possible to time my arrival so precisely. While I am still on-call for my Fresh 48 clients, that just means that I promise to be available within 48 hours of delivery or to send a backup photographer. The session is typically scheduled for the morning after baby arrives, baring any medical complications.

WHY WOULD I CHOOSE A FRESH 48 OVER BIRTH COVERAGE?

There are many reasons you might want to choose a Fresh 48 instead of birth coverage. Birth photography is often a much greater investment than families realize. Many decide on a Fresh 48 as an alternative to birth photography, because it is so similar and the Fresh 48 comes with a less eye-popping price tag. But even if money is no object, here are a few reasons a Fresh 48 might be the better fit for you:

  • You have a history of premature or precipitous labor and are afraid you’ll deliver before I can arrive

  • You are delivering in a facility where photographers or extra visitors are not permitted into the birth space

  • You wish to keep your birth experience private

  • You have other children you would like included in your session and aren’t sure they can be there for the birth

  • You really want me and I am already at capacity for your due date (I only take a few births per month, so this happens a lot)

  • You are adopting or using a surrogate and the birth mother is uncomfortable with birth photography

CAN I HAVE A BOTH FRESH 48 & BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHY?

For sure! And many of my clients choose to do both. Babies faces change SO FAST, especially in those first few hours. Most babies come out blue, swollen, and rather squished looking. By the next day, their features and coloring have changed significantly. Plus! A Fresh 48 gives mom a chance for pictures after she has been able to shower, dress, and do her hair and makeup. Frequently I have clients who did not originally book a Fresh 48 ask at the birth if I can come back the next day for one. Spoiler alert, I usually can!
